Characterizing the shape, size, and distribution heterogeneity of pore-fractures in high rank coal based on X-ray CT image analysis and mercury intrusion porosimetry

•X-ray CT and mercury injection porosimetry of coal were compared at multi-scales.•Pore-fractures were divided into five types and described by a shape factor.•Pore structures and distributions in coal are heterogeneous and complex.
