Three decades of Canadian marine harmful algal events: Phytoplankton and phycotoxins of concern to human and ecosystem health

•Harmful algal events occur annually on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada.•PST events are the most reported HAEDAT events on both Atlantic and Pacific coasts.•Harmful algal related fish kills have occurred on both coast but are more common on the Pacific coast.•In Canada harmful algae have negatively impacted humans, fish and other marine life.•Potentially harmful algal species are widespread throughout the Canadian arctic.
