Terrestrial laser scanner calibration and performance evaluation using the network method

•Calibrate a network using a laser tracker (LT) or terrestrial laser scanner (TLS).•Calibrate the TLS error model using the networks.•Evaluate the TLS performance using the networks.•LT-calibrated network and TLS-calibrated network provide comparable results.•Guidance on the feasibility of TLS-based network calibration is presented.
