•Energetic nichrome bridges (ENCBs) were prepared by integrating reactive multilayer nanofilms (RMFs) Al/CuO on nichrome bridges.•The enhancing effect of RMFs Al/CuO on the output performance of ENCBs were systematically investigated.•The effect of RMFs Al/CuO on the firing process of NCBs were studied under the constant current conditions.
