FT-NIR Spectroscopy - Effective Breeding Method for Parameter Prediction of Flour Retention Capacity in Common Wheat

The parameters of SRC test (AACC 56-11) were assessed in the heterogeneous collection of 90 modern wheat cultivars and old wheat landraces. The analyzed flours of individual wheat samples were currently measured in the system of FT-NIR spectroscopy. The aim of this study was to obtain acceptable NIR calibration models for fast screening prediction of particular SRC parameters. The calculated NIR calibration models confirmed, with the exception of the parameters for lactic acid retention (r(cv) = 0.63), the high level of predictive confidence (r(cv) = 0.89 - 0.94). Regarding the high genetic heterogeneity of the tested wheat collection, it is possible to presume a wide application potential of NIR models in wheat breeding selection programs as well as for mapping of technological properties in wheat gene resources of the Gene bank. The more reliable NIR prediction for lactic acid retention could be achieved in connection with an increasing of calibration samples, in the wheat set with a narrower genetic background and at more frequent validation of the NIR model with the reference method.
