•Survey data from 650 Norwegian cyclists over three years are studied.•Bicycle lights and high-visibility clothing are related to reduced crash involvement.•Safety equipment use is related to less high-risk behavior in traffic.•Safety equipment may be a precautionary measure in risky situations.•Crash involvement may lead to improved behavior but not to reduced cycling.
