•FTOC/MXene was fabricated by combining MXene, C and (Fe2.5Ti0.5)1.04O4.•FTOC/MXene shows a unique two-dimensional architecture.•FTOC/MXene exhibits a superior rate performance as anode for LIBs.•The effects on restricting the volume expansion during cycling have been studied.
