•Rectus sheath block (RSB) improves pain control and reduces opioid consumption after laparoscopic surgery.•Preoperative RSB provides better early pain relief compared with postoperative block administration.•RSB can be recommended to be used routinely in laparoscopic surgery, including laparoendoscopic single-site surgery.
