•IFN-γ and TNF-α licensing didn’t influence the cell cycle of MSCs.•IFN-γ and TNF-α licensing increased chondrogenesis MSC populations and decreased osteogenesis MSC populations.•IFN-γ and TNF-α licensing changed MSCs into anti-inflammatory populations uniformly.
