摘要
Objective: To study the demographics, clinical and electrophysiological profile of patients with Guillain-Barre Syndrome during pregnancy and their prognosis. To study the correlation between GBS and pregnancy. Background: GBS is an immune mediated disorder characterised by progressive weakness of the arms and legs and areflexia. GBS occurring during pregnancy is rare with an incidence of 1.2 to 1.6 /100,000 population. It can occur during any trimester of pregnancy. There is a delay in diagnosis due to the presence of symptoms overlapping with pregnancy. Treatment is the same as for non pregnant patients. Design/Methods: This study was conducted in the Institute of Neurology, Madras medical college. Patients admitted with GBS during pregnancy were enrolled in the study between September 2018 and 2019. They were examined clinically and scored according to the Hughes, EGRIS and modified Erasmus GBS outcome score. Electrophysiological studies classified patients into demyelinating and axonal variants. The nature of treatment given and the prognosis was studied. Results: A total of 5 patients were included in the study with a mean age of 27.2 years. GBS occurred in the 2nd trimester in 3 patients and third trimester in 2 patients. The clinical patterns included classic sensorimotor, pure motor, bifacial palsy with parasthesias, paraparetic variants. Hughes scoring at admission ranged from 3–4. None of the patients required mechanical ventilation. Nerve conduction was suggestive of AIDP in 1 patient, AMAN in 1 and AMSAN in 2 patients with normal conduction in 1 patient. Intravenous immunoglobulin was given for 3 patients. Out of the 5 patients 3 have delivered healthy babies normally. Conclusions: In our study, pregnant patients with GBS had a milder course with good response to immunomodulation. There was no predilection for any stage of pregnancy. The maternal and perinatal period was uneventful. Disclosure: Dr. Jayaharan has nothing to disclose. Dr. Samivel has nothing to disclose. Dr. Ranganathan has nothing to disclose.
