Abstract
Climate and weather conditions not only strongly influence energy demand but, with the strong development of the renewable energy, also increasingly electricity generation. The changes of the European energy mix, together with ongoing climate change, raises a number of questions on adaptation of the energy supply system. The Clim2Power project aims at translating the latest scientific findings on the medium (seasonal forecast) to long term (climate projections) evolution of the climate into usable information for end-users. The analysis covers thw whole of the European power sector, complemented by four national/regional case studies reflecting various EU contexts regarding climate, hydrology, socio-economic settings, electricity generation portfolios and energy markets in Portugal, Sweden, Germany-Austria and France. For each geographical context, maximum capacity factors for wind, solar and hydro power generation, as well as the electricity demand are estimated from climate data. This data inputs both power system and energy system (TIMES) models to assess the optimal operation of the power system. A project user-board with several stakeholders accompany the project and select indicators relevant to support decision making. Finally, a web climate service is developed allowing a user-friendly and interactive access and visualisation to the information produced.
