LYMPHADENITIS-COLLI CAUSED BY NONTUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIA

A 2 1/2 year-old girl presented with enlarged cervical lymph nodes caused by Mycobacterium avium. Although non-tuberculous mycobacteria represent only a small number of causative agents, diagnostic work-up of cervical adenitis must include appropriate testing for mycobacteria. Therefore intraoperative specimens for culture should be obtained. Furthermore, methods provided by molecular biology techniques allow to detect and identify the organisms. The mainstay of therapy for cervical lymphadenitis is complete removal of the lymph nodes.
