Abstract
Social acceptability is the key to success for any new industrial development, such as the opening of a new mine. A survey was conducted in the province of Quebec in Canada to investigate opinion, perception and social acceptability towards the mining industry. The survey highlighted that Quebecers recognize the importance of the mining industry for the economic development of the province, but they have a low level of trust in the mining industry. Nonetheless, they also recognize their low level of knowledge of this industry. The most important benefit perceived is the job creation, whereas their major concerns are related to environmental issues. The level of trust towards mining companies is in fact the lowest among the different actors of the mining development, whereas the scientific community and the non-profit organisations obtain the highest levels, way above municipal, provincial and federal governments, as well as media. The acceptability of the mining development is mitigated, only 7% of Quebecers are opposed but only 10% encourage its development. Quebecers are less favourable to open pit mines than to underground mine, and become even less favourable to their exploitation if located in their own region. Hydroelectricity is the most socially accepted natural resource exploited in Quebec, followed by mineral resources, forests, and oil and gas.
