Frailty is associated with chronic inflammation and pro-inflammatory monocyte subpopulations

•Frailty shows an association with early mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).•An elevated content of intermediate (CD14++CD16+) monocytes are associated with the syndrome of frailty.•The content of intermediate (CD14++CD16+) monocytes disclose a potential use as biomarkers in elderly patients and could be a possible therapeutic target in the future.•An altered immunological status determines the survival after TAVI.
