THE PEPERINO OF VITERBO IN THE RELIGIOUS AND HISTORICAL BUILDINGS: CHARACTERIZATION AND CONSERVATION

The aim of this paper is the study of the geological-technical characteristics of the Ignimbrite Cimina, called peperino; it is the most used building material in the majority of the historical and religious buildings of Viterbo. The study that will be described, starts from the experimentation of a Bachelor's degree thesis in Technologies for the Conservation and Restoration of the University of Tuscia (Viterbo, Italy) in order to determine petrographic, physical, hydraulic and mechanical characteristics of peperino naturally aged and quarry. The results of the scientific investigations were useful in order to identify the most correct and appropriate consolidation and protection practices according to the peculiar characteristics of this material widely used in Viterbo area.
