A Two-dimensional Supramolecular Complex Constructed by 1,10-Phenanthroline Derivative Ligand: Synthesis, Structure and Luminescence

An unusual two-dimensional supramolecular complex, namely, [Cd-2(Cl)(4)(L)(2)] (1), has been synthesized by 2-(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthrolin-2-yl) phenol (L) and CdCl2 center dot 2.5H(2)O under hydrothermal conditions. The compound was characterized by elemental analysis, TG and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in triclinic, space group P (1) over bar with a = 10.151(2), b = 14.119(3), c = 14.744(3) angstrom, alpha = 115.744(4), beta = 108.063(4), gamma = 93.371(4)degrees, V = 1762.7(7) angstrom(3), Z = 2, C38H24Cd2Cl4N8O2, M-r = 991.25, D-c = 1.868 g/cm(3), F(000) = 976, mu(MoKa) = 1.560 mm(-1), R = 0.0639 and wR = 0.1307. In 1, two Cd(II) atoms are bridged by two chroline atoms to give a dimer. Neighboring dimers are linked by N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bonds to afford supramolecular chains, which are further joined together by pi-pi interactions to result in a supramolecular layer. In addition, luminescent property and thermal behavior of compound 1 have been studied.
