Phase-Field Simulation of Dendritic Growth

The multi-dendrite growth during isothermal solidification of Al-2-mole-%-Si alloy was simulated using phase field method. The effect of anisotropy strength on the dendrite morphology was also studied. The simulated results illustrate the morphology of dendrite with primary and secondary arms. The process of dendrite growth and the competition between the dendrite arms are reproduced during solidification. The simulated concentration profiles show the solute enrichment in which the primary arms have the lowest concentration, but the regions between the arms have the highest concentration because of the build-up of solute. The anisotropy strength exerts an influence on the dendrite morphology.
