Abstract
In the early 2000s Brazilian demersal fishery in the shelf break and upper slope was booming and Lophius gastrophysus has become of economic interest for export. Following, there was a large increase in the effort directed to the species. In Sao Paulo State its landings in 2000 summed 61.5 tons, reached 1063.2 tons in 2001 and, in 2007, were 163.1 tons. L.gastrophysus is captured with double rig trawl and bottom gillnets directed to the species. Data analysis of 3469 fishing cruises with landings registered in Sao Paulo State between 1990 and 2007, indicated that the capture of this species is incidental in trawles operations and target to gill getters. Generalized linear modeling pointed that for the trawl fishery CPUE varied with year, depth, month and latitude. For gillnet fishery the fishnet the fishing boat itself had the most significant effect on CPUE.
