Recurrent limbic seizures do not cause hippocampal neuronal loss: A prolonged laboratory study

•Rat models of seizures and epilepsy were examined for evidence of progressive neuronal loss.•Limbic seizure burden ranged from 6 to over 12,000 over a period of 3 to 20 months.•No evidence was found for progressive neuronal loss.•There were changes over time in the neuropil.•Intermittent seizures do not cause progressive neuronal loss, but do cause other structural changes.
