Fifty-two consecutive patients referred to a tertiary hospital for HF, were divided in three groups, taking into account the different HFE gene mutations and transferrin saturation index (TSI). It was concluded that an increase in liver iron concentration (LIC) of greater than three times the ULN is highly unlikely in HF patients who do not have HFE-related hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) or causes of secondary IO.
