Fatness and fat distribution: Associations with plasma lipids and blood pressure in physical active young men

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to verify the hypothesis, that there are statistically significant associations of fatness and fat distribution with plasma lipids and blood pressure in group of physically active men. A sample of 31 physical education students were examined. Body fatness (BF) was estimated by Body Impedance Analysis (BIA). Fat distribution was determined by waist to hip ratio (WHR). Body Mass Index (BMI) was also counted. Systolic (SP) and diastolic (DP) blood pressure, total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglyceride (TG) and glucose (Glc) levels were determined. Plasma characteristic was supplement by indices: HDL/LDL and TC/HDL. The non-linear regression analysis showed statistically significant associations of BF with SP (R-2=0.21, P<0.05) and Glc (R-2=0.32, P<0.05). WHR and BMI were related with: DP (respectively R-2=0.14, P<0.05; R-2=0.15, P<0.05), TG (R-2=0.13, P<0.05; R-2=0.14, P<0.05) and TC/HDL index (R-2=0.15, P<0.05; R-2=0.18, P<0.05). There were found a negative relationships of HDL with WHR (R-2=0.27, P<0.01) and BMI (R-2=0.17, P<0.05). Associations of BF, WHR and BMI with TC, LDL and HDL/LDL index were statistically insignificant. The results showed, that even in young physically active men, in which group the level of CVD risk factors is low, it is possible to define the relationships between body fatness, its distribution and some other CVD risk factors.
