•WDM-PON system combination with a spectrally hidden stealth data system.•The power penalty caused by the embedding of hidden channels was negigible.•Received BEr of both systems was below the defined pre-FEC BER level of 2.3 × 10−3.•The average BER for WDM-PON system was 7.23 × 10−19, for stealth system 1.13 × 10−6.
