Coupling mechanism of natural gas deflagration flame and continuous water in closed pipeline

•Three different flame propagation stages and their characteristics are identified.•Continuous water medium simultaneously accelerates and suppresses flame propagation.•Generation mechanism of three forms of water induced by gas deflagration is obtained.•The coupling relationship between flame extinction and water distribution is revealed.
