Development of tuned particle impact damper for reduction of transient railway vibrations

•The tuned particle impact damper exhibits excellent attenuation capability.•It combines the characteristics of a dynamic absorber and an impact damper.•A numerical model was exhibited and various design factors was established.•With the application of the proposed damper, train rolling noise can be minimized.
