Comparison of the elastic and plastic behaviours of two interpenetrating phase composites with HCP inspired morphologies

•Phase morphology strongly influences the mechanical properties of IPCs.•Presence of a low-compliance path produces higher mechanical properties.•The shape and orientation of the low-compliance path have a strong impact.•Shapes producing stress concentrations and high deformations reduce properties.•Phase morphology becomes more important after the stronger phase yields.
