Objective acoustic and aerodynamic analyses of voice after frontal anterior laryngectomy with epiglottoplasty

Objective: !n this study, we aimed to pe:form an objective analysis of the acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics of vc.lice dunng the pteGpeiative peUod and the ea:ly and late postopetative pr" r, at110:":g patier:ts wPo had unde:gor:o trentai aotetior latyogectomy with epigiottopiasty (FALP, to determine the degree to whic h voice was affected after surgery. Methods: The sti.griy gm,o imrliuded 21 si.;bie;r1ts who had undergone FALL 3i.;bie;:.1tivr? evaluations were performed.c "g the Grade, Roughness, Breathess, Asthenia, Strained (GRBAS) scae and the Turkish version of the Voei-iand'icap index Obiective evaluafions were performed through vc ae analyses of voice recordings from the preoperative: 3-rnonth postoperative, and I -yea' postoperative periods_ The a:alyzed paramete.rs i:-2luded fundamental frequency (F0,., determination; s' "'a % t5e ft nc.lise-to-l"-2rmonic at o (NHR), vs cc Sy of the fundamental frequei-:cy (VFC;*), amplitude pe:w:bation quotimt ai-:(1 soft phonation index_ (spi). Results: Subjective voice evaivatio:-:e revealed that subjects gmle:ally reported that their voice was adequate, while pNysicians using GRBAS scale,generally found that patients exhibited hoarseness and weakness :which they interpreted as a moderate -to -severe voirrm disorder. Laryngostroboscopic evaluation revealed that most pat"ients showed a longitudinal and "irregular glottal closure defect Conclusion: Our resuits indicated that patienta had a dysphonic voice dur'ir,g the early and late postoperative per'ic.Ids after -'ALE; hr,mever, they exhibited adequate speaking and respiratory functions, Thus, FALE can be COnsidered a surgical techni,:lue that preserves the patient s voice to a degre.e acceptable to co:ti:-Lie professional and other activities; ciespite voice quality dis:uption.
