Real time voltage stability prediction of smart grid areas using smart meters data and improved Thevenin estimates

•An improved method was developed for estimating Thevenin voltage and impedance.•This new method uses individual load measurements for improved accuracy.•Includes a method of estimating the maximum power using Thevenin parameters.•A new stability index using the estimated maximum power is introduced.•New method is tested and compared with classical version in simulation.
