Determination of genetic variability, population structure and genetic differentiation of indigenous Turkish goat breeds based on SSR loci

•We revealed genetic diversity and population structure of Kabakulak goat for the first time by means of SSR markers.•It is the first study showing that Kabakulak goat, which is accepted as a Hair variety until now, was genetically closer to Honamli rather than Hair goat breed.•Unlike the results of the previous SSR studies, Norduz breed was detected to be genetically different from other Turkish goat populations for the first time.
