•The P3HT surface has been modified to deposit perovskite by an air and argon plasma treatment.•The method is controllable and non-damaging for the polymer.•After plasma treatment, The increased density of carbonyl (C = O) as a polar active site at the P3HT surface leads to achieving better wettability.•Improvement of perovskite grain size with employing a non-wetting P3HT substrate.•Improvement sustainability of perovskite devices by substituting PEDOT:PSS with P3HT.
