•Edge-curve geometries affect soil-blade interaction of soil cutting and throwing.•Ball-ball normal stiffness of the DEM model kn was calibrated to be 6 × 103 N/m.•The average torque requirement decreased with increase in the slide-cutting angle.•Less soil particles were thrown upward with the increase of the slide-cutting angle.
