Abstract
Oral health in psoriasis (PsO) patients is not well-characterized. This study examined differences in the types of dental procedures received by PsO patients compared to matched non-PsO controls in a linked claims and dental database. Adult (aged ≥ 18 years) PsO patients with ≥ 1 inpatient or outpatient non-rule out psoriasis diagnosis were identified between 1/1/2014 and 12/31/2017 using the IBM Watson Health MarketScan® Commercial and Medicare Supplemental and Dental Claims database. The index date was the first observed PsO diagnosis. Selected patients had continuous medical, pharmacy, and dental benefits in the 12-month pre-index and 12-month post-index periods. PsO cases were matched directly to non-PsO controls based on calendar year, age, gender, and region. The number of dental visits, frequencies and types of dental procedures, and total dental costs during the 12-month post-index period were compared between PsO cases and controls. This analysis included 51,163 PsO cases matched to 51,163 non-PsO controls (average age of 51 years, 51% were female, the majority resided in the South, and 52% entered the study in 2014). Compared to non-PsO controls, PsO cases had a higher average number of dental visits (2.00 vs. 1.81 p<0.001), and had a higher frequency of the following dental procedures: diagnostic (72% vs. 67%, p<0.001), preventive (64% vs. 60%, p<0.001), restorative (31% vs. 27%, p<0.001), and periodontics (11% vs. 9%, p<0.001). Consistently, PsO patients incurred $69.90 higher average total dental costs than non-PsO patients ($584.30 vs. $514.40, p<0.001) during the 12-month post-index period. This study showed higher frequencies of dental procedures and higher number of dental visits among PsO cases compared to the general population in a large, nationally representative linked medical and dental database. Psoriasis management should encompass routine dental examination on oral health status and respective treatment where required.
