Physiological and survival effects of capture of red scorpion fish Scorpaena scrofa (Osteichthyes: Scorpaenidae) by different fishing gears in the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean)

•Scorpaena scrofa is a species of high commercial and recreational value.•Survival and physiological stress of specimens below the minimum size were studied.•Trammel net and fishing line were the most selective fishing gear over S. scrofa.•Survival 24 h after capture by trawl, net fishing and line was 0, 70 and 100%, respectively.•Trawling induced greater physiological stress in S. scrofa than in other gears.
