•Oxidation kinetics of nitrided Ti-6Al-4V investigated using infrared emissivity.•Similar kinetics and activation energy to the non-nitrided material.•Ti2N offers greater protection against oxidation compared to TiN.•Nitridation reduces the thickness of the subsurface oxygen diffusion zone.•Dual-scale TiO2-Al2O3 oxide layer is formed at higher temperatures.
