•C. chrysosperma is more aggressive than C. notastroma on drought-stressed aspen.•A third species, Cytospora nivea, was also detected on sampled aspen.•Cytospora species often co-occur on the same host tree.•Evidence of recombination or possible hybridization between Cytospora species exists.
