•Ag-SiO2 nanoparticles by superior antibacterial property was synthesized.•Nanocomposite PVDF/SiO2 and PVDF/Ag-SiO2 membranes were fabricated by NIPS method.•Neat and nanocomposite membranes’ performance was evaluated in a lab-scale MBR.•Nanocomposite membranes showed superior antibiofouling performance.•EEM spectroscopy revealed different composition of EPSs on the membranes.
