•Eco-efficient indicators by environmental frontrunner companies are analyzed.•Environmental statements of 387 EMAS-registered Spanish organizations are analyzed.•39% of the 10,337 indicators were only set with minimum eco-efficiency criteria.•Implications for managers and public policy makers are discussed.
