•Cordiaquinone E showed antileishmanial activity in vitro to L. amazonensis;•Cordiaquinone E exhibited selectivity indexes (SI) greater than reference drugs;•Cordiaquinone E induced apoptosis in promastigotes forms;•Cordiaquinone E reduced the infection index of macrophages by L. amazonensis;•Cordiaquinone E increased TNF-α, IL-12, NO and ROS production and reduced IL-10 levels in macrophages infected.
