•The role of Bu-Shen-Jiang-Ya decoction on hypertensive renal damage in Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rats is investigated.•Effectively cutting off the TGF β/SMADs signaling pathway is a significant therapeutic measure for the prevention and treatment of hypertensive renal damage.•Bu-Shen-Jiang-Ya decoction is an optimal therapeutic agent in hypertensive renal damage by inhibiting the TGF β/SMADs signaling pathway.
