•Papillary thyroid carcinoma with a high tumor mutation burden has a poor prognosis.•High-TMB patients showed lower immune cell infiltration.•High-TMB patients showed more tumor-promoting immune cells and fewer antitumor immune cells in proportion.•Immunotherapy could be a viable option for advanced PTC.
