Abstract
•BAT thermogenesis is fueled by CPT1B-dependent fatty acid oxidation.•The CPT1B gene is conjoined to the CHKB gene exclusively in eutherians.•CHKB-CPT1B is transcribed within a unitary epigenetic domain in eutherians.•These genes are independently expressed from discrete domains in opossum.•CHKB-CPT1B conjoinment precipitated the emergence of BAT in eutherians.
