Abstract
The Ultra High Intensity and Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHIMPE) Composite and the Al-Sc alloy can be extensively applied to aerostatics and aerospace because of its special properties. Utilizing the two-stage light gas gun, the hypervelocity impact experiments of Whipple shield made of UHIMPE composite material, Al-Sc alloy and Al alloy 2Al2 were conducted. The diameter of the bumper perforation and the damage of the rear wall were surveyed and observed. According to experiment results, trend of the ballistic limit curve of two materials Whipple shield was analyzed qualitatively. The experiment results indicate that the Al-Sc alloy can fragment the debris more effectively and the performance of Whipple shield made of the Al-Sc alloy is more excellent than the Al alloy 2Al2, and UHIMPE composite material is very inferior by comparison.
