Clinical evaluation of a novel analgesic disposable urinary catheter

Objective To introduce a new analgesic style of disposable urinary catheter and evaluate its clinical application compared with normal Foley catheter. Methods On the basis of surface anesthesia mechanism, utilizing elastic motivity and the flux control that is characteristic of latex, a novel disposable urinary catheter was manufactured and patent was obtained for the utility model (patent No.03231019.6) by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) of China. The new product has been trialed on 55 patients randomly whilst another 55 patients received Foley catheter. The state of pain, urgency, and anxiety due to the urinary catheter were measured and compared. Results VRS-4 scores and the feeling of urination in testing group (with analgesic catheter) are significantly lower than the control at 8h and 24h after inserting catheter (p<0.01). Conclusion This novel disposable urinary catheter is better at relieving catheter-derived pain and uncomfortableness.
