•We test the monophyly of Conchocarpus, subtribe Galipeinae (Rutaceae).•We used morphology and molecular data to infer the phylogeny of the Galipeinae.•Galipeinae (the subtribe Conchocarpus belongs) are monophyletic.•Conchocarpus is polyphyletic and formed by two groups.•Conchocarpus gaudichaudianus group is recognized as a new genus, Dryades.
