摘要
It is generally believed that the purpose of a newspaper is to inform the reader what is happening in the world around us. However, as one of the representatives of a political organization, newspaper reports news or events on behalf of a leading group. A biased tone is often created by presenting comments or opinions to manipulate people's thoughts; to some extent it does affect people's opinions. In the meantime, politician's news with a reporter's commentary on certain affairs is also common occurrences in some newspapers to show a balanced point of view to let the audiences present the judgment. Broadsheet and tabloid are two main types of newspaper in the English-speaking world. Broadsheets are typically targeted mainly at a middle-class market while tabloids focus more on working-class readers [1]. Broadsheets, for example, The Times', The Guardian' and 'The Daily Telegraph' are often known as the 'quality press' being more informing and formal in the manner they convey information and news events. By contrast, tabloids, such as, 'The Sun' and The Mirror' are more informal in styles and often show bias in political reports[2]. The study is to investigate the different languages used by the broadsheets and tabloids in reporting political news and the purposes. The texts were gathered from broadsheet The Times and tabloid The Sun, which reported the same political news.
