New method of generating Strut and Tie models using truss topology optimization

The paper deals with automatic generating of Strut and Tie models via truss topology optimization. A method is developed to modify the classic ground structure approach. In order to rationalize the solution a penalty parameter, that represents cost of the nodes, is introduced. Stresses in concrete are controlled by an iterative construction of the ground structure, hence the design code requirements are met. The linear programming problem is handled with the use of the adaptive ground structure by means of a solution of both primal and dual formulations of the optimization problem. Algorithms allowing generating the ground structure in arbitrary domains bounded by polygons assure versatility of the method.
