Mixed feelings on wind energy: Affective imagery and local concern driving social acceptance in Switzerland

•Large-scale survey of Swiss residents (n = 1111).•Local concern about wind projects is strongly correlated with affective imagery.•Important differences exist in affective imagery of mild versus strong opponents.•Mild opponents have conflicting feelings about wind energy.•Second thoughts about wind energy tend to be more negative than initial ones.
