•Long-term, multi-sector, integrated energy system planning model is proposed.•Case study on future Belgian energy system is presented.•Study analyses role of power-to-gas and carbon capture technologies.•Results show very little role for power-to-gas in decarbonisation strategies.•Carbon capture appears to play major role in decarbonisation strategies.
