•Factors that affect the rollover and release of hazmat in cargo tank truck crashes.•Bayesian model averaging-based logistic regression models were estimated.•Crash, truck, road, environment, and driver traits were the explanatory variables.•Side impacts and severe crosswinds increased the likelihood of rollovers.•Rollovers and intersections increased the likelihood of hazmat release.
