Safety evaluation of drowsy driving advisory system: Alabama case study

•Drowsy driving advisory systems were developed and implemented on Alabama interstates.•The DDA system is an engineering countermeasure with a series of roadside signs.•Roles, characteristics, and safety assessment of the DDA system were discussed.•The DDA system can significantly reduce both total and drowsy driving crashes.
