•A global view of aberrantly expressed genes in UC was provided.•20 hub genes in UC were identified both in GEO datasets and clinical samples.•The landscape of immune infiltration in UC was revealed.•10 compounds that may have therapeutic activity in UC treatment were screened.•The potential of meclofenamic acid for UC treatment was identified in a colitis mouse model.
